After a Year of research (GITANEUSA.com Site, some of the Site Members, and other Sources including Mel Pinto, of Mel Pinto Imports and the generously provided knowledge of Cycling, and Components by R. S. Broderick) along with seeking and acquiring proper parts for the restoration and upgrade of my Gitane "Tour de France" (purchased by me while attending College circa 1972), I present the finished project.
1971 - 1972 GITANE 'TOUR de FRANCE', Reynolds 531 tubing, 62cm C-t-C, 'Match Blue' in color.
PERIOD CORRECT UPGRADES FROM ORIGINAL, SPECIFICATIONS / AS PURCHASED, PARTS:
3ttt 'Record' alloy Stem, 95 mm, late 1960's - early 70's First edition. Refinished. (reproduction decals)
BELLERI 'St. Etienne' alloy Handle Bars, 41.5 mm C-t-C, with Randonneur/Touring style bend. NOS
IDÉALE 90 'Speciale Competition' Saddle with chromed steel rails - 'Rodée Main Selon - D. Rebour' treated leather - Tan. NOS
IDÉALE 'Special Competition' saddle clamp having an integrated bracket for a Toe Strap to hold a spare tire. NOS
SIMPLEX chromed steel seat post binder bolt. NOS
SIMPLEX 'Criterium' alloy shift levers, earlier 'Wing' logo, 1960's - early 70's. NOS (my Bike was originally equipped with Simplex 'Prestige')
SPÉCIALITÉS T.A. 'Criterium' chromed steel water bottle cage. NOS (Chosen for the single clamp design to reduce the, not to my liking, clutter of a double clamp style.)
SPÉCIALITÉS T.A. 'Spécialités De Course' water bottle. NOS
GITANE leather tool bag. Age unknown. I suspect 1960's - 70's. USED and fitted with new straps as the originals (retained) are worn and nearing the breaking point.
SLIGHTLY MORE, to MORE CONTEMPORARY UPGRADES:
SCOTT/MATHAUSER Brake pads, Size 'M', designated for use with Mafac and Dura-Ace holders/shoes. NOS. These replace the original Mafac 4 Dot pads.
GENERIC (Japan) 26.4 mm alloy seat post. NOS
SPÉCIALITÉS T.A. #273 spare tire carrier, White, for under saddle mount or inserting into bottle cage. NOS
LAPIZE White leather toe straps. NOS (later logo). To replace the original LAPIZE early logo straps.
ORIGINALLY FITTED PARTS, REPLACED WITH PROPER NOS PARTS:
MAFAC Model 121 Brake levers, with MAFAC dedicated White Rubber 1/2 hoods.
SIMPLEX 'Criterium' front derailleur.
LYOTARD 460 D alloy pedals. French thread.
CHRISTOPHE 'Special' (indicating size Large) chromed steel toe clips.
VELOX White Rubber bar end plugs.
SILCA 'Impero' pump with Campagnolo chromed steel Presta head and Campagnolo chromed steel Umbrella clamp. (originally purchased with a Black pump but I saw fit to replace it with White in keeping with the other White accessories)
ORIGINALLY FITTED PARTS RETAINED:
CAMPAGNOLO 'Nuovo Tipo' high flange Hubs (lock nut date: 71) laced to MAVIC 'Montlery' (this is the correct/alternate spelling engraved on these) tubular rims (date code 0771). Reproduction Mavic decals (NOTE: These are not 100% proper reproductions as they read 'Made in France' below 'Mavic'. Proper decals would read ' Marque Deposee' below. Also, the proper secondary decal reading only, 'Championnat Du Monde' is not available so is not present at this time.). CYCLO '64' 14-21 Freewheel (French thread) on the rear. Newly installed TUFO S22 Tubular Tires, 21 mm, Gum sidewalls.
STRONGLIGHT 'P3' chromed steel Head set, French threaded.
STRONGLIGHT '93' alloy Crank set. 52-42 chain rings (122 mm BCD), 170 mm arms, French thread for pedals. I have a set of STRONGLIGHT '105' BIS, 51-40, compatible chain rings that I am considering as substitutes.
STRONGLIGHT 'Competition' Bottom Bracket, French threaded 35x1. 118 mm spindle.
SIMPLEX 'Criterium' Rear Derailleur. (Date code 3-71)
MAFAC 'Competition' alloy center pull Brakes. Engraved logo. A new set of alloy holders have been trimmed in length for a more proper fit and appearance of the slightly shorter (40 mm vs. 45 mm) S/M pads.
HURET chromed steel brake cable Clips (3).
To this date I have done nothing to hide the very minimal 'Patina' of scratches to the paint on the Frame. It remains in exceptional cosmetic condition considering the age. NOTE: I have no recollection of it ever having, or my removing, the traditional 'Service Course' Top Tube decal or the right side 'TdF' Fork decal. The original 'Reynolds 531' decal remains on the left side of the Fork.

Thank you for the compliment on the finished project.
The bag was a special find. I have carefully cleaned the corrosion from the closure and was fortunate to find properly sized and colored straps to replace the worn originals (within the bag). It's more for "Eye Candy" than use.

What a beautiful restoration. The machine was wonderful before but now it's, well, it's just stunning.
Thanks so much for posting the after effect.
I believe the patina is so important on restorations and it's good to see that you have retained it.

If you ever want to get rid of that Freccia D'oro "Torquemada Model" saddle, I have a space in my "Little Shop of Horrors" collection of torture devices. My 1971 TdF is almost all original except for the Brooks Pro that I installed.
I've never seen the toe clip strap feature on any Ideale saddle clamp before. Where did you find it?

The clamp is only the second one I have ever seen. I was able to get it through a friend in Belgium. I was looking for the micro adjustable #3 clamp and he came up with this one so I snapped it up. It's micro adjustable also. Here's a photo from Velobase...
