I just bought an old Gitane frame and forks on ebay. It looks very much like the first picture of the blue 1970 TDF on this site, but it is missing some of the decals I would expect to see. Here is what I can make out:

1. top tube: Service Course ... Gitane
2. Down tube: Gitane Interclub
3. Seat tube: the red hand w/"custom made" (but no Reynolds sticker, perhaps because it's a 49 cm?); on the silver decal, Champion de France, Champion du Monde, Coupe du Monde, Inter Marque, Service Course
4. Chainstay: "email luxepolymerise"
5. Dropouts: can only make out a stamp on the left: 8 3960 (?)
6. Headtube has a stamp also at top and bottom: BCM

I just cannot tell if this is a Tour de France, or if it's an Interclub; or whether some of the decals are missing because it's a small frame.

I've added a picture.

Thanks for any help you can give. I intend to convert the bike to a fixed gear, if I can find the parts and if I can do the work

Hi Seiler

Looks like an interclub to me. The Chrome fork and painted rear stays, should be correct. It's difficult to tell from your photo, but it looks like the rear derailleur hanger is of the bolt on type rather than being part of the frame. This would not be the case with a TdF or other top models. The interclub decal would also be unusual on another model. The great news is that for a fixie, it's a good set up. The Interclub rear tips have a long horizontal opening which is perfect for getting the correct chain tension without having to use a bolt on chain tensioning device. One tip though. The flat rear tips work much better with a nutted rear axle than a quick release. Hope you have fun with the conversion. Make sure you post some photos. Cheers.

I agree with Wisey, even if he is upside down.

The downtube sticker that says "Interclub" is the model name.

Yes, it's definitely a northern hemisphere bike. If it was one of the gitanes made for the aussie market, it would have a decal on the seat tube that reads: Bulcretni Laughing
