Was the plain chrome post straight diameter, of was it smaller at top, like the old Raleighs? I need a post and saw both in 26.4 on evil bay.

The TdF seatposts were chrome plated steel like this one, only a little longer. If you live near an old bike shop, you may be able to find one dirt cheap or even free!

Make sure to get a good seat clamp. The cheap ones are garbage (like in the picture above). They don't have fine adjustment, the nuts and threaded "axle" are soft and strip or break easily, plus they don't stay adjusted!

The old Ideale clamps are about the best. They have fine adjustment via rotatable slides in the rear with locknuts.

The Brooks clamps are next best. Looks like they are selling them again.

Simplex seatposts were period correct and at the time one of the few readily available choices beside Campagnolo and Zeus.

They were made in a number of different versions - chrome plated steel, aluminum alloy, fluted alloy and so on.

Seat tubes are usually rough inside and can have sharp burrs that will chew up alloy seatpost. Check out these tips:

Clean out any old grease or gunk with a solvent soaked rag or whatever.

Also, you can use a large screwdriver or other kind of wedge to spread the "ears" of seat lug to open the bore up a little. Make sure to remove any burrs that you might kick up inside the seat tube.

Use a brush hone or brake cylinder hone to smooth out the inside of the seat tube and remove any excess paint or corrosion.

Last, take a glop of grease and spread it inside the seat tube and on the seatpost.
