What you have is a 1968-1973 50cm (19") Gitane Interclub. The Interclub was Gitane's entry level amateur racing model and as such, was equipped with sewups (tubular tires). What's wrong with the forks? Send picture... You are going to need a French thread headset. Here's one currently on eBay. It's a Peugeot headset but it will work fine on your bike: http://tinyurl.com/qh3tqyx No relation to seller, yada, yada, yada... Or if you go for a replacement fork it may have British threads so you'll need a British threaded headset. Problem with a bike this size is that it takes a very short steering tube on the fork and replacements are hard to find. I'd suggest that you look around for a donor bike (preferably a French make) at some thrift shops like the Salvation Army etc. You can probably find an older bike with all of the parts you need for ~$25. That would be my first step. Get back if you don't find something. BTW, it's hard to tell from your picture whether the tires are sewup or clinchers - that's why I asked how old your son is. _________________ Chas. The Stronglight 99 crankset is an upgrade. It probably takes metric threaded pedals, it can be retapped to take British threaded pedals. Not what you want for a 7 year old unless the bike is going to be used for racing only. Find some 700c wheels with alloy rims. The rear hub width should be 120mm wide over the lock nuts but you may have better luck finding 126mm wide hubs that were made for 6 speed freewheels. If you're in Britland, you may have better luck finding 27" wheels with alloy rims. _________________ Chas. Couldn't tell from the picture. Those 24" wheels are actually French 600a size and they're a lot smaller than 700c wheels. There are some 24" British rims that are very close to 600a size. The levers that went with the Simplex entry model Prestige derailleurs were made of Delrin plastic and broke pretty easily. The Delrin body on the front derailleurs frequently cracked preventing them from being tightened. They were a terrible design and NEVER worked very well anyway. The brakes were probably either MAFAC or Weinmann. There were smaller levers available from both manufacturers but Gitane probably never bothered to use them on these bikes which were made for younger, smaller riders. The shift levers and brake levers were probably off of a Raleigh bike. The white brake lever hoods probably say Carlton on the sides. _________________ Chas.
