Found a 1985 Performance bike that is within driving distance. "All original French parts except for tires, tape on handles and gear shifters. Needs a front derailleur". Listed price is less than $125 and its within a few hours drive of my home. It would be my second Gitane if I picked it up. I don't race, just joy ride. Something to play with over the winter??? Worth $125??

Drove to Lansing this AM and got the bike for $100. The student was given the bike by his professor. The bike had belonged to professors late brother and had been stored in barn for many years. The student wanted to ride it from his housing to the university but roads are to rough and he kept blowing tires. So it sat in his living room for the last year and a half.

Main issue is the front derailleur. The cast 'C' shaped clip that held it to the seat tube has failed. Locking ear on the end broke off and that in turn snapped the bolt on other end of the clip. Have to start searching for parts. Bike looks great to me, also it is 4 lbs lighter then my Gransport.

That's a common problem with some Simplex front derailleurs. Someone got carried away with a wrench and overtightened the small bolt.

You got a great deal - about a $400+ bike for $100! Cool

You can find a similar Simplex replacement front derailleur plus shift levers on eBay.

I would agree - fantastic deal. I've traveled further for bikes in not as good condition and paid more. Enjoy the ride!

FYI:
Spent SOME TIME scanning e-bay and found most front derailleurs very $$$. While taking a break from cleaning the bike components up I went on line to Harris Cyclery. and they had exact match part in stock!! So I ordered a Simplex SJA-102 Front Derailleur from them: $21.95 plus $7.99 shipping.

I have looked at their web site several times but this is my first order with them.

For those interested: http://harriscyclery.net/sitesearch.cfm?search=simplex+derailleur&goSiteSearch.x=0&goSiteSearch.y=0

Which model is the rear derailleur? SX410, 610, 630? These were also sold as Gipiemme (I just picked one up) and Spidel and come up on Ebay fairly frequently.

If you don't care about originality look to Suntour. I've gone with Suntour Edge and Blue Line derailleurs for my two Gitanes and they work excellently
