Wow,

I've never seen a Canadian made Gitane.

It looks like an early 70s Grand Sport. They were entry level bikes but it should ride nicely.

Well, and this is just a guess from a guy with dual American/Canadian citizenship, is that it was a tariff thing. Ship the completed frame with parts unassembled from France, build the bike in Canada; Viola! A Canadian Gitane. It's not a bike until it's done. Only a theory.
Bonne chance mon ami.

Probably a good guess.

Gitane West was bringing in some bare painted frames and assembling them in Southern California for a few years during the mid 1970s. We bought the last of those bare frames when Gitane Pacific went under in 1977.

I think that Trek may have been doing some of that too in the early 80s when they had a relationship with Gitane.

So cool! Didn't even know they built them there. I knew that some of the models available in the USA during the mid 1970s were badged Gitane but made in Japan...but these I have never seen before!

Very interesting! Thanks for posting these. No matter how long you are in this "game", it seems something new pops up to surprise!
