A Tale of Two Frames on eBay.

Both of them are rare 1974-75 Gitane Champion du Monde frames. Both are mislabled.

The first Champion du Monde is listed as 1975 Tour de France:

The other is listed as a top of the line Olympic model:

The Champion du Monde was a European only bike, the model below the top of the line Campy equipped Olympic bikes.

They had all Reynolds 531 frames with chrome plating on the lower halves of the forks and rear stays. The components were French rather than the Campy parts used on the Olympic models.

They also had shorter 33mm stack height Stronglight P3 headsets rather than the higher 41mm Campy Nuovo Record headsets.

1974-75 Tour de France frames had only the 3 main tubes made of Reynolds 531 and only the forks were half chrome plated not the rear stays.

Also the 1974-75 Champion du Monde and Olympic frames were made of lighter gage Reynolds 531 tubes than most of the other Gitane models from that era.

I sold this 1974-75 Champion du Monde frame several years ago.

1976 all Campy Gitane Olympic bike.

The reason why I bring this up is that so many eBay sellers incorrectly list items. Some of these folks describe the items authoritatively as if they're experts... but they haven't done their homework and research on their listings! Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad

I've contacted a lot of sellers to inform them of their incorrect information.

Some are appreciative of my suggestions because they don't want buyers accusing them of misrepresentation - others have responded negatively.

Hi! Nice post! I have a frame that I donīt know exactly what it is. Can you help me? Here some photos:

http://bikes.florestaencantada.org/fotos/gitane/index.htm

It seems a Champion du Monde, but the fork its different! And it could be a Tour de France, but it have all tubes reynolds, and the fork is different! Could it be a Olympic?

Best regards,
NSilvaCoelho
