Hello! I'm new to this website and a proud owner of a Gitane sinceyesterday! I was told it is a Gitane Professional but looking at the catalog it looks like a 73-74' tour de France. It's been polished and handlebar tape is new (black suede).

It appears to have:

Huret derailiures (Are these original?)
Mafac competition brakes
Ideale 2002 sadde
Weinmann 700c wheels

I am absolutely in love.

Do you have some close ups of the drop outs and the head tube/headset. It's definitely a nice looking bike.

On a side note, I flew into the Long Beach airport today for a conference. Looked like some great weather to take this out for a ride.

Hello, thanks for the reply. I updated the post and added more pictures.
Yes, its been a bit chilly at night but the daytime weather is perfect for a ride.

Thanks for the photos - should clean up really nicely. Lovin' those honeycomb drop outs.

Some tubular tires would make it an outstanding ride.

By the way, your "bit chilly at night" is downright balmy for those of us from the north. Wink

Hahaha I know, by chilly I mean low 40's. I'm from Colombia, high 90's and 100% humidity all year long. Never got used to the "cold".

Thanks for the reply.

Greeting,

You have a 1976 Gitane Tour de France. Looks almost all original. You can get replacement decals for ~$40 from Greg at Cyclomondo on eBay.

Here's a link to a 1976 Bicycling Magazine review:

These bikes came with the titanium and aluminum alloy Huret Success derailleurs which where HIGHLY underrated - FAR better shifting than anything Campy made until the late 1980s!!!

You have a very special bike. Very few of the 1976 TdF's were imported into the US and even fewer with the pantograph seat stay caps like yours has.

Here's a photo of mine.

Jay,

You did a great job of restoring your TdF. Can you post a few more pictures?

I suspect that the bikes with the brazed-on seat stay caps were from mid to late 1976 and European models only.

A few of the TdFs and higher models (Champion Du Monde, Olympic and Super Olympic) did make it into the US but they were never promoted by Gitane Pacific. Rolling Eyes

Chas.,

The restoration entailed a light cleaning and new tires. Otherwise, the bike is as purchased from the seller in NC. I did get an original down tube decal from France but have not installed it yet. Greg's decal is not quite correct.

How did you get decals from France and do you have a link?

Thanks,
