50$ gets you a Gitane Olympic which looks all original except seat.

Not an Olympic, it's a 1976 Tour de France. Still, a very good deal! Wink

Notice the Bernard Hinault sticker on the seat tube?

There were some variations in the frames for each of those models... Rolling Eyes

After closer examination I think that the bike is a late 1975? not a 1976 Tour de France.

Here's why, per the 1975 poster in the catalog section:

http://www.gitaneusa.com/images/catalog/1975/poster.jpg

TdF had Sugino cranks with black chainrings and Simplex Criterium derailleurs.

Here's where it gets sticky... the 1974 and 75 TdFs had 3 main tubes Reynolds.

The 1976 TdFs had all Reynolds frames. The bike in question is all Reynolds 531 tubing too.

The 1976 TdFs had the willow leaf seat stay caps. So does this French bike as did the 1976 Gitane Olympic models.

The French bike has Normandy Competition hubs, MAFAC 2000 brakes, a straight steel seatpost and a Stronglight P3 headset.

Clear as mud so far? Confused

All of the flavors of the Olympic models had all Campagnolo components except for the Super Olympic bikes had Campy brakes. The others had MAFAC brakes.

1976 Super Olympic

Hope this helps... Twisted Evil

Thanks for help! Funny poster with guy with no shirt next to girl that dresses for winter (my French wife dresses like this!) And pretty serious looking "mature" Gitane rider. Interesting that the catalogues from this period have the bikes slightly tipped up and not dead on side views.

So who knows?, they probably didn't.

Dan

PS. I have had 4 Gitanes like the one for sale. All had full Reynolds and Two had the capped stays. All had chrome rears with Huret. One I bought from original owner who still had original catalogue the dealer gave him with the price of the bike written in hand and marked down in hand "Tour De France"
