i recently bought what i believe to be a 1968 Gitane Professionnal Super Pista in need of restoration.
The bike had the foil decals, but it had been almost complety covered in sickers form a claibration lab. In my haste to remove the offending stickers i must have scraped off the underlying factory decals. (note to self, take picutres before starting a resortation)
The frame has been stripped, bead blasted, primed and painted. and reassembly has begun.
I could use help getting the right decals in the right places.
Does anyone have pics of a complete bike like this. I looked in the catalog, but they are pretty grainy.

We started by stripping the frame
It was during this process we discovered the seat tube had rusted through in spots, see pic below.
Fortunately my son is a skilled bodyman and has the skills to weld and smooth the Reynolds tubing.
Shadows of the many decals plastered on the bike can be seen on the seat stays

Any seat tube that far gone should be replaced or sleeved at best. It looks like it's been repaired once already.
I'd carefully check all of the other tubes before putting any effort into the seat tube.
Alloy tubing like Reynolds 531 is much more sensitive to heat than sheet metal used on cars.
I've replaced a number of seat tubes. I cut out the tube close to the seat lug and BB shell and then carefully grind out the remaining tube with a grinding stone or carbide burr in a small air grinder. |

This type of repair was only feasible because of the extent and location of the damage. Damage in the seat tube was limited to a 1.0" band caused by a paper towel stowed in the seat tube.
We used a heavy copper pipe inside the seat tube as a heatsink, to prevent burn-through and heat distortion. I doubted the repair until I saw the results for myself.
Areas most susceptable to rust were bead-blasted to detect potential problems. The rest of the frame showed no defects. |
