Folks: I usually don't get rude...really ever. But this message was so over the top, that I had to take the JERK to task. Now I get emails all the time asking questions about bikes. I usually respond right away, but every now and again, one slips under the radar. This apparently happened a few weeks ago....

I was hoping to gain some insight into an older Gitane Allure I recently purchased in the Phoenix, AZ area. I'm doing a complete reconditioning of the bike to bring it back to complete riding capability.
I'd like to gain some insight into this model, but I'm finding that information is scarce. I was hoping this email might find someone that can answer some basic questions about the bike. Following are the items I have found on the bike.
Serial # - beneath bottom bracket - first line - LLC 165849. Second line - 24504 7. Third line - 12
Frame - steel, but not sure what type of steel - butted, CroMoly etc? That's one of my questions.
Speeds - 10
Color - Blue. Decals are black with yellow outline. "Allure" in small letters near the front of the top tube, drive side.
Saddle - not original
Wheel Hubs - Maillard - front is stamped 47 83. Rear hub is 49 83. I'm assuming the 83 is for 1983??
Rims - Regida SuperchromeX
Shifters - Stem mounted friction type by Huret
R. Derailleur - Sachs/Huret unit
F. Derailleur - Huret unit
Brakes - Side pull calipers - Weinmann
Brake levers - Weinmann with "safety levers", also referred to as Suicide Levers!!
Cranks - Aluminum - Solida. Code on back is KS or K3
Chain Rings - Steel - 42 & 52 size
Freewheel - Maillard. Range - 14-28
Pedals - Lyotard 136R
I hope this info helps. It does appear from the general condition of the bike, that these above items are original. Questions I have are:
Year of this bike?
Frame construction/materials?
Is there a catalog for this model/year with specifications? If so, how do I find it?
In the line up of Gitane bikes, was the Allure an entry level, mid level or ???
Where was this model sold?
Approximate retail cost (US dollars) when bike was new?
Whatever help you could provide would be a greatly appreciated!! I think I'll have a very nice, vintage bike when I'm finished with the reconditioning. It should be a great bike to ride.

Sarcastic & rude. A great combination when asking someone about a bike, specially when it is that person's HOBBY.
Your email must have just slipped off the radar. Of course, my day-job as a lawyer takes up most of my time.
Before you get uppity and come across like a total asshole, learn to read, and use that skill on my web page.
A friendly reminder would have sufficed.

PS: the Gitane "Allure" has no collectors cache. Don't spend too much time on it. And those aren't "suicide" levers. You don't know what you are talking about. How's that for an answer?

Your very tardy reply certainly says a lot about you and whatever information you possibly could have about bikes - which is probably useless anyway. And I'm rude and sacastic?? At least I have the capability of returning emails in a timely fashion. Take a look in the mirror when you're calling someone an asshole!! And why bother mentioning what you do for a living. Do you really think I give a rip if you are a lawyer?? Actually that's the only bit of real information you have offered me - it helps to explain why my first email was not answered - it was a total d***, who's vision of self importance helps him determine where his priorities are. I rate lawyers right up there with used car salesmen. You can take your valuable web site and cram it up your worthless, lawyers' ass.
And, oh yeah - those second set of brake levers over the years have, in slang, been referred to as suicide levers. It was more than likely directed against the DiaCompe levers and not specifically for the Weinmanns - but that might be getting too technical for you to comprehend.

I've only been a member of the forum for a little while. I have made a few posts and I've been impressed with the civility and patience i"ve been given, considering 'm sometimes a bit of a dummkopf. (I don't know the french term for that . . .)
I spend a lot of time reading and learning from what all the members post on this forum.
I't's too bad that Stephan had to be subjected to that kind of attitude from somebody. I can understand why he had to take the guy to task.

Dear Dan, FYI, Weinmann bought their "safety" levers from DiamCompe who held the patent on them!

Hi All, Have just got my hands on a '84 Allure which needs a bit of fixing before getting it on the bike track/road. First question of many I'm sure, what is the head stem type needed; dimensions, measurements, etc. All advice welcome. Thanks.
