It's a 1974-76 Mexico with either a Stronglight P3 headset or a standard Gitane headset.

Gitane Headset

The 3 main tubes are made of butted Reynolds 531 tubing with lesser quality forks and stays.

The BB and headset are probably metric and it will take a 22.0mm stem.

Hint, Nitto forged aluminum stems are marked 22.2mm but are usually 22.1mm and will fit in most French steering tubes.

The "B M" is actually BCM which stands for Bocama brand lugs. The number 73 is the angle of the lug indicating the the head or seat tube is 73°.

The bottom lug on the head tube may be marked 56 or 57 indicating the lower angle too.

French road bikes back then usually had 72° head and seat tube angles. Track bikes were 73° or 74° angles.

Take the frame to a hobby shop or auto parts store and try to find some paint that comes close to matching.

Hobby shops probably sell Testors which make a metallic blue that is a little darker that your frame color. You may be able to get a closer match with some auto touch up paint.

Use several light, thin coats of paint. You just want to camouflage the scratches. Once you put some shiny parts on the bike, scratches are less noticeable at 10 feet (3 meters).

Before (note this was before I cleaned off the dirt)

After

Hi, i am french, living in Paris.
I have a Gitane frame ( Tour de France 1977?) and i want to repaint it. Same Metallic Blue than yours. Do you find a paint code?
Is your bike finished? Have you some pics?
Regards from Paris

Greetings,

Those bikes were painted with what the Brits call Flamboyant and the US candy apple lacquer.

They used a white, silver or gold undercoat with a dyed transparent top coat. That's why they tended to fade in direct sunlight.

In the case of your bikes the top coat used a blue dye.

In later years they used metallic paint.

Thank you Verktyg for your answer.
Do you know a paint code for this metallic paint used later?
May be it 's easier to use Metallic paint than silver undercoat + Candy Apple lacquer?

I doubt that you will ever find a paint code number as the original Gitane organization went out of business many years ago.

You can probably get a decent color match at an automotive paint supply company. They have color matching equipment.

Metallic paint is ALWAYS easier to apply than the transparent Candy Apple colors.
