I bought a Gitane mixte frame bike yesterday for my girlfriend for £10 on ebay. It needs a lot of work, cleaning and painting before it can be used but I wondered if you could help me identify the model and year?

Looks to be a circa 1983 Gran Sport Mixte. http://www.gitaneusa.com/images/catalog/1983_pg4.jpg

Thanks. I will put some photos up when I am done rennovating it. I had a look at the catalogues on the site but wasnt certain as the rear caliper is on the middle stay rather than the top.

Gitanes that were sold rarely match the exact specifications in the catalogue. Usually, getting "close" is about as good as we can do on some of the models!

Therein lies the charm...
Is there anything I should know in particular when refurbishing it? Any tips are most welcome, this is my first attempt and, while on a student budget, I am really hoping to come out of it with a nice bike for my girlfriend to use in the summer. Is the reason I can't find a master link on the chain probably because there isn't one?

There will be no "master link": You will have to "break" the chain. Throw it away and get a new one.

The bike looks to be in good condition. Just clean it up, repack all of the bearings (don't even attempt to remove the fixed cup from the bb), clean up the gears and replace the chain.

Replace the shift & brake cables plus the housing, new tubes/tires, perhaps some bar tape and a new saddle, and your girlfriend should be good to go.
