Hi,
I'm new here. I signed up because I just bought a Gitane CX identical to this (though not in anything like as good condition). So sorry for the thread dredge!
I didn't know a whole lot about Gitane before, so it's great to find this resource, and I've been looking for a cross bike for a while so I'm excited about the build.
The paint and decals on mine are pretty tarnished, I will have a look at touching up and polishing, but I am also considering powder coating and some replacement decals. Is that heresy to you guys!? Anyone know the best RAL for the gitane blue? Or whether it's possible to get the same metallic effect with powder? The results I've seen on the Internet look a bit too glittery I reckon.
I'm assuming that this will be a French threaded (is there a definite way to tell?), I'll be ordering the Velo Orange headset and BB. I'm going to go for a Stronglight Impact chainset and run a single speed configuration I think (it's very flat here). I will probably run a set of Tektro CR720s with Tekro levers and crosstops.
Have already purchased a nice Cinelli XA, and a black San Marco Rolls - so some bits will be period correct at least!
Pictures of course when the build is complete.
Any thoughts? Comments? Tips? |

So I finished my build recently:
The frame was powdercoated RAL 5025 which although not quite the Gitane French blue is still a very nice retro looking metallic blue finish.
Components: San Marco Rolls saddle, Campagnolo Record seatpost, Cinelli 1R stem, Cinelli Top bars and Cinelli cork tape.
Brakes: Tektro CR720 Canitilevers with RL520 Levers
Wheels are my old set of Mavic Cxp22s with Ambrosio fixed hubs and 32mm Challenge Griffo Clinchers which are great looking and riding.
Drivetrain: Shimano 18T singlespeed freewheel, KMC 710SL BMX gold chain and Stronghlight Track chainset (44T)
With Velo Orange French threaded Headset and Bottom Bracket.

Nice. Bummer that the seat tube decal was applied upside-down. Really want a cross bike right now.... |

Ummmm...nope. They originally were one sticker that wrapped around the tube, always applied from the "inside" of the triangle. So the direction" of the Gitane lettering would be opposite on either side of the frame. Take a look at the pics of Lofter's '84 above. Also, the Reynolds sticker was applied to the down tube, not the seat tube, and they only applied one stay decal. Sometimes it was on the chainstay side, sometimes the opposite. I don't know why that is.... |

Ha!
Well I was paying so much attention to getting them seated straight that when I looked at the photo I didn't check to see the direction on the other side of the seat tube. oops!
My 531 sticker is on the same place as before, but you are right about the chainstay decal - there was only one, but as my decal set had both I put them on anyway.
Hopefully not too many other people will notice my mistakes ;)
Cheers |
