Just opened a package from France...

Bought a wool Systeme U hat, which can be seen in the 1988 US catalogue. Really cool...but not much use here in Southern California.

What is even better is that I also got a pair of the Systeme U / Cycles Gitane Shorts of the same vintage. Looking at them, it turns out that (1) the gear was owned by one Pascal Poisson, who rode for Renault-Elf from 1980-1985, then Systeme U from 1986-87 (then Toshiba and Team Z, but who cares about that!).

Anyhow, the shorts are actually "Madison" track shorts (called the "American" in Europe), with a reinforced midsection and a pocket on the right side for the dowel-like pulling tool, usually reserved for juniors who are not yet able to do hand slings in events.

These shorts have a "P.P." written on the tag, and the seller said that they came from Mr. Poisson. Pretty cool, eh?
