Super bike. Very nice indeed. You've done a great job and I'm a huge fan of Modolo brakes. They look great on these '80s Gitanes.
Thanks for posting.

I was noticing that my headset is quite stiff.
Will need to open it up and check the bearings.
Where can you get replacement roller-bearings for this and the A9 (Same headset but with plastic cups & steel races)? |
These headset have needle bearing and they last a long time. The grease gets hard and makes them stiff.
Take the headset apart and soak the pieces in some kind of grease remover. Make sure that it doesn't damage the plastic parts. Clean thoroughly, apply fresh grease and reassemble.
Put the stem in before you do the final adjustments on the headset.
If you do need replacement parts, this eBay seller from the Netherlands has some for sale. I've bought things from him before and I highly recommend him:

I ain't puttin no stinkin Italian brakes on my 1984 Team Pro!
It's going to be all French (or almost all French).
I have some MAFAC LS2 side pull brakes (they look like they were made by Modolo).
I tried them on for size!

LOL!
Chas,
I liked the look of the black against the blue, particularly as components finished in black were reasonably unusual at the time. However, I also like Modolos as I had a pair of Speedys (silver finish) in use for many years and they gave faultless performance time and time again. In addition to their operation I found their design to be very appealing. They were solid and well made, and for a low to mid range model the Speedys were a terrific buy. I have no experience of the Pro model.
Those Mafacs are very nice too. Super condition. There were some great brakes on the market at that time, more so than now.
Enjoy the build.

Actually from what I recall, these Mafac were made by Modolo.
Thanks for the suggestion on the headset.
I kept mine as close to "Team Specs" as possible, with exception of the rims/tires & seatpost. Somewhere in my house I had once made a "Replica" of a TDF number plate that was fitted to the number boss (including a LeCoq logo), can't find it in my house full of "Junk". |

The braze-on front derailleur came out the following year, when they went to Syteme-U with Campagnolo equipment.
I outfitted this to team specs (except wheels & seat post).
This would have been exact to the Renault-elf specs. |

I think you are mistaken about when the braze-on derailleur appeared on the pro bikes:
1983: Braze on (Simplex/Modolo components)
1984: Clamp on (Campagnolo Components)
All of the Systeme U Team Pro bikes were clamp on (as far as I know). |

the gitane catalogs r off a year, they rode fr.derailleur braze ons in 83 when fignon won the tour and lemond won the worlds, those bikes appear in the 84 catalog. the bikes they rode in 84 when fignon doubled were no fr derailleur brazeons and campy sr equipped. thats the only difference in the two frames .we have yet to see a catalog that those 84's campy sr appear in .
if you notice in the 83 catalog the 82 super course with the old decal design (cycles gitane) on the downtube, 82 was the last season they used the old design ,in 83 they went to the new design the same year fignon and lemond won .technically it says 84 but we know they are the 83 team bikes. would love to see a 85 catalog . its still a great bike tho. |

These guys were all riding Crampy equipped bikes. The old style Gitane logo at the top has the chevrons. So what year was this?
Here's Fignon in the 1983 TdF on a French equipped bike with a braze on Simplex FD.
These bikes appear to be Crampy equipped too... What year was this?

In postcard "a" the guy to the left of Hinault looks like he has on the Dutch National Champion jersey, to the right the French National Champion jersey. We wont talk about the guy in the Stars and Stripes... |

You can also identify the 1983 team/season bikes from the single Gitane decal located on the seat tube, facing forward. In 1984-1986, they used the same decal as on the down tube.
Starting in the 1986 Tour de France, the Systeme U Gitane's started using a different decal. Strangely enough, Fignon's bike for that race didn't use the new decals, but stayed with the old circa 84 logos. They used variations of these decals on the French Racing Blue Gitane bikes through 1987. These were based on the Systeme U "stripes", and were tres cool...but so few examples or pictures exist. I have a great poster of Mottet on his delta with those decals on. If I could get my hands on a set of those.....
Then in 1987, they moved to the white/black/yellow design as shown in the 1988 catalogue (they first appeared on those bikes during the Tour de France). The USA catalogue has the seat tube decal incorrectly applied - check the French catalogue for the correct decal placement).
The way to figure out what year it is during the 1987/88 seasons is to look at the bibshorts. In 1987, they used a white side panel with the red 'U' and "Cycles Gitane" in blue block letters. In 1988, they went to black/yellow/white striped side panels on the bib shorts.
Click here for examples of each.

The top picture of Mottet is the 1987 Tour de France (note the jersey vendor in the background). Scroll down to the bottom picture for a view of the 1988 Systeme U kit. The bikes are the same.... |
