My second '71-'72 Gitane Tour de France built up for regular Town / Errand riding in the European style. I can now keep my original College TdF in reserve for Special Events.

1971 - 1972 GITANE 'TOUR de FRANCE', Reynolds 531 tubing, 60 cm C-t-C, 'Record Red' in color.

PERIOD CORRECT UPGRADES FROM ORIGINAL SPECIFICATIONS & AS PURCHASED (Used) PARTS:

3ttt 'Record' alloy Stem, 105 mm, late 1960's - early 70's First edition. Refinished. (reproduction decals)
PING (Poutrait-Morin, France) No. 106 chromed steel bell. NOS
LYOTARD No. 23, M. Berthet chromed steel pedals. French thread.
SIMPLEX chromed steel seat post binder bolt. NOS
SPÉCIALITÉS T.A. No. 213 chromed steel water bottle cage (handle bar mount). NOS
SPÉCIALITÉS T.A. water bottle. NOS
SPÉCIALITÉS T.A. No. 270 (Porte-Sac) chromed steel front rack. NOS

SLIGHTLY MORE, to MORE CONTEMPORARY UPGRADES:

3ttt saddle (Model unknown). Black suede leather over thin, firm padding. NOS
3ttt Model 'Record' alloy seat post. 26.4 mm (1973)
MAILLARD low flange hubs laced to MAVIC 'Module E' 700C clincher rims (1975, First generation reproduction decals for rims). 700c TUFO C S22 tubular clincher tires.
ATOM 6 speed freewheel, 14-24
MKS Mini toe clips with leather covers. NEW
UNKNOWN alloy handle bars having a Randonneur bend.

ORIGINALLY FITTED PARTS, REPLACED WITH PROPER NOS or BARELY USED PARTS:

MAFAC dedicated White Rubber 1/2 hoods.
SIMPLEX 'Criterium' front derailleur.
SIMPLEX 'Criterium' rear derailleur, Date code 1-71. (Barely Used).
VELOX White Rubber bar end plugs.
SILCA 'Impero' pump with Presta head and AFA chromed steel Umbrella clamp.

ORIGINALLY FITTED PARTS RETAINED:

CAMPAGNOLO 'Nuovo Tipo' high flange Hubs (lock nut Date Code: 71) laced to...(pending) These may or may not go back on this Bike, as I have chosen to ride the Maillard/Mavic set listed above.
STRONGLIGHT 'P3' chromed steel Head set, French threaded.
STRONGLIGHT '93' alloy Crank set. 52-42 chain rings (122 mm BCD), 170 mm arms, French thread for pedals.
STRONGLIGHT 'Competition' Bottom Bracket, French threaded 35x1. 118 mm spindle.
SIMPLEX 'Criterium' shift levers
MAFAC Model 121 Brake levers.
MAFAC 'Competition' alloy center pull Brakes. Engraved logo.
HURET chromed steel brake cable Clips (3).

Minimal 'Patina' of scratches (I have chosen not to disguise them at this time) to the paint on the Frame. It remains in exceptionally nice cosmetic condition. Chrome is excellent.

Virtually all of the parts which were added to this bike were already in hand. I have picked up parts over the past months that I thought were bargains, thinking that I may one day do another TdF. And now I have.

The balance of original components that were not used for this build have been kept.

PIVO Stem, LYOTARD 460D alloy Pedals, CHRISTOPHE 'Special' chromed steel Toe Clips, FRECCIA D'ORO rislan / nylon Saddle.

Jay,

Congratulations, your surprise package looks great! Cool

Bikes that I plan on riding I customize to meet my needs with mostly period correct components. Bikes that are "collector's" items I try to keep all original, but.... there is no way I'm going to sit on one of those Gitane plastic a** hatchets! Rolling Eyes

But I thought you wanted one of these for your display case??? I now have an extra one to sell for a very modest price.

Jay,

Lovely looking machine and well done on the restoration. It looks superb. I also like the autumnal background.

I'm a real fan of originality, scratches, marks or patina. To me, this is all part of the story of the machine.

Enjoy your trips out and thanks for the post.

Tim,
Fall has arrived in Virginia. The rain and wind put the Maple leaves on the lawn in short order. Last week it was clean.

Thanks as always for your comments.

Beautiful bike Jay. How long did it take you to acquire needed parts and then finish the bike?

Scott,
Finishing took a Week. Virtually all the additional parts were on hand. I had acquired them over the past Months, just in case or to resell them, before I even knew I was getting another TdF. I'm always looking for bargains.

A few of the photos were taken yesterday before I had longer bolts for the bottle cage on the handle bars. They arrived this morning, so it's done.

Man I like the Candy Apple Red color of the early 70's. Great looking ride, the front rack and water bottle holder are classy pieces also. Thanks for sharing.

I noticed a post from Kinst earlier today, and would echo his thought about possibly including an image of the "Artisans of Bicycle Restorations" along with their project bikes images. Putting a face on the talent demonstrated in these forum pages.

Again Great Job Jay !!!

C.A.,
I couldn't resist...
That's my Furkid 'Raz (Shiraz), a rescued Greyhound. So now you know, I rescue Greys and Gitanes.

The funny thing is that she did that herself and stayed in that position for at least a minute or more. I don't think she liked what was on TV. I was laughing so much I'm surprised I got the picture.

She's good at hiding my tools too.

OK, I went down and had the Precinct Sketch Artist do this while I'm trying to find a photo...

Congratulations, Jay!
Beautiful velo and a job well done. I believe that you did it right in regards to the upgrades. While I agree with Charles that whereas; if the bike is to be a museum representation, one should probably retain most (except, for example, the saddle on this vintage TDF) of the original parts, that would be (in my opinion) an unusual case. My criterion would be: "What upgrades would be reasonable for a knowledgable owner to undertake over, say, a five to ten year period"?

The saddle and stem upgrades, in my view , would be obvious, but I believe that the others make sense, as well.
Bienvenue,
Peter H.

Peter,
Thank you.
As you can tell, it was not my intention to do a "restoration". I wanted a bike that felt comfortable riding around Town casually. All additional parts post date the bike by 5 years or less (or are fully period correct) with the exception of the MKS Mini toe clips and Tires.. I consider all of them as acceptable upgrades as you state.

Regards,
Jay
