Does anybody happen to know of the seat post diameter for a mid 70's Gitane Gypsy?

I guess I could pull out the post and mic it.

Looking for a new modern post for my project. Might have to mill a new one down.

Most probably 26.2 or 26.4. You can get aluminum seatposts made in that size today (Kalloy)...or find an old one on Ebay pretty easily. No reason to have one milled, but I would recommend taking it to your LBS and having the existing one measured, just to be sure.

Is this a French or Taiwanese made bike? If I recall, the old French bikes were 25mm or 25.8mm. The best thing to do is measure the seatpost diameter rather than guess.

You can find 25mm or 25.8mm seatposts pretty regularly on eBay.

My early 1970's Gitane SC took a 26.2. My 1976 Tour de France takes a 26.2 as well.... My 1980's bikes took a 26.4.

It is positively not 26.4, I have a 26.4 post and it does not fit. Just by eyeballing it, it didn't seem like a 26.2 was going to fit either.

The gypsy should be French made...at least that is what the stickers say.

I will put some mics on the seat post later this week to see what they measure. I don't trust the bike shops near my house.

...your bike shop should have an internal tube measure...don't they? Interesting that it is smaller than 26.2....

The Grand Sport models were the entry level Gitanes imported into the US during the early 1970s. About 1974-5 Gitane changed their decals from the old foil style to the newer green or yellow logos. The Grand Sport model name was changed to Gypsy along with the offering of paint colors.

The 1970s US Bike Boom bubble burst in early 1974. A lot of the European bike manufactures were stuck with warehouses full of bikes. There were some pre 1974 Gitanes available up until about 1976.

Grand Sport and Gypsy bikes weighed about 28 Lbs. with steel rims, cranks and handle bars.

In 1976 Gitane introduced the Gypsy Sport model which was made in Taiwan. They were really clunky, weighing in at around 32-34 Lbs. We brought in 1 or 2 to have some cheap bikes in stock. We ended up using them as examples of cheap bikes so that we could sell customers into better models.

The frames on the Grand Sport/Gypsy models were made of straight gage low carbon steel tubing. The wall thickness of the tubes were ~2mm thick. The tubes were metric so the seat tubes were 28mm in diameter. If I remember, the seat posts were 25.8mm in diameter.
