Hi bnbnash, I have had the same issues finds the specs. I own a 69/70 tdf and I could not get help either until I was watching youtube concerning a tdf and the guy showed the catalog for the year and mentioned that the specs are on the rear pages. So, I would think if you found the image of the catalog online for your year and bike you will find out lots. As per the metallurgy I don't think it will help. But, it likely will get you on the right path to restoring the bike. As has been mentioned by others Gitane was out of the USA and |Canada during your posted years. Good luck hope this helps.

An ounce of knowledge is worth a pound of guesses! Rolling Eyes

slrbnash can you post some pictures of your frame/bike?

In 1983 Gitane entered into an unholy alliance with Trek. Trek marketed Gitanes in the US via a subsidiary company: Cycles de France.

In exchange, Gitane sold Trek MTBs in France.

The Gitane Team Pro wasn't listed in the 1983 US Gitane literature. They may have been available on special order as either a bare frame of complete bike.

They were called both Team Pro and Team Replica.

Here's Fignon on a 1983 Gitane Team bike. Compare this with the 1984 Team Pro.

Two differences: the Gitane decal is on the front of the seat tube in 1983 and on the sides on 1984. The 1983 bikes had Simplex/Spidel brazed on mount front derailleurs, 1984 were clamp on derailleurs.

But... there were a lot of undocumented variations.

The 1984 catalog shows a 1983 bike

1984 Team Pro

Most of the Team, Team Pro and Team Replica bikes had a brazed on number tag under the top tube.

Gitane used both all Campagnolo Super Record components and French Spidel components.

Spidel was a marketing consortium of independent companies that included Stronglight, Simplex, Atom/Maillard, MAFAC and others. The reason was to compete against Campy and Shimano who offered complete gruppos.

There were also some bikes equipped with Mavic gruppos.

This page from the 1984 US catalog lists the specs - click on page to enlarge:

1984 Stronglight catalog - 107 Cranks

1984 Stronglight catalog - Bottom Brackets

118.5mm was the standard with for double chainring Stronglight cranks. The 650 sealed bearing bottom brackets had steel spindles. 651 had titanium spindles. Both models used aluminum alloy cups. The early versions had standard style fixed cups.

Later versions used adjustable cups on both sides. These may have been mislabeled 600 or 700 BBs.

In the early 1980's Gitane switched to British threads on their bottom brackets and headsets.

Up through the end of the 70's BBs and headsets were French metric threads.

Hope this helps a little... Chas.
