Hi folks,

I'm new to this forum, and as a European, not sure how welcome I am.
Anyway, I have recently purchased a Vitus GTI tubed Gitane frameset, and I'm trying to identify the age of it.

I have been looking on the web, but can't seem to find any brochures or other info on what year it may be from. Can't even find any pictures of the RMO team riding them.
I am gathering Mavic parts to complement the frame and I nearly have a whole bike's worth.
If any of you can help with identifying the age, around 1990 I'm guessing, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

MM Wink

Sorry I can't help you with identification.

I can tell you though that this form has members from all over the world and I am sure you will be warmly welcomed to the forum.

Just because you guys make great cars, really good films, great music, made great planes and motorcycles and you think you can just get into french bikes so easily! (joke)

Well OK

Anyway I had a similar bike 1990 team Replica see 1990 catalog and all Vitus Triple butted.

I still have this bike which is a 1994 Team trial bike used in the TDF.

It was all Mavic and made of Colombus tubes.

So your bike fits in there somewhere.

I once found a video of the RMO time trial bikes being used in the TDF from 1994.

Best Regards

Hi,

Thanks for your help Wink

So, the RMO team used these bikes from 1990-1994? They were on green and white Liberia framed ones in 1991 and possibly 1992. I'm confused now. Can't find the catalogue, despite my best efforts
You have some nice bikes there. Love the saddle Cool I do have some yellow and black Vittoria tyres and was unsure about using them on my build, 'til I saw yours! Look great.
Just need to find rims for them now Rolling Eyes

Sorry I am useless for dates and teams so someone else can help you on that. My bike was used by Thierry Laurent. at least thats whats signed on it and I was told in around 1994 but maybe earlier.

The Team replica is in the 1990 catalog on the Gitane USA site.

regards

This model should be the 1990 Team Replica, I believe. It was not sold in the U.S. (if it makes that much of a difference)! However, the team that rode it was not RMO, but the Belgian team Histor-Sigma. That in the '87-'89 timeframe;(hedging my bets). Much as in the catalogue, these bikes were set up with a Sachs group. A picture on the wall is one with Irish great Stephan Roche at Paris-Nice in 1987 ((alongside Ekimov (Panasonic)), I believe. Roche made second overall. However, Roche was on a Gitane-Vitus Carbone, not the standard GTI model! A bit further back, another Histor stalwart (looks like Wilfried Peeters to me) is to be noted on his standard team issue Gitane-Vitus GTI!

Hey thanks for that info, I remember the Histor-Sigma team, still going in 1990 and maybe 1991 as that was when I started racing. I'll look up some pics of that team now!

You will probably realize by now that you are extremely welcome here. Personally, I was very glad to make your acquaintance. By the way, as other members already pointed out, the RMO tt bikes were crafted with Columbus Genius tig welded lightweight steel. The only other RMO team road bikes that I remember seeing were carbon models. Your Histor Team Replica Gitane- Vitus GTI is, in my opinion, a very desirable velo.

Thank you both for your kind comments Wink
I must admit, I am looking forward to trying it out. May try to source a Histor jersey too Rolling Eyes Laughing

Still looking for images, only see Vitus alloy tubed bikes, along with Vitus on the jerseys. Maybe the one I have was meant as a training frameset

Hi folks Wink

Finished building this bike a couple of weeks ago, and I'm now riding it. Done a couple of 100k + rides, as well as commuting. Feels nice. Here's some pictures for you

Hope it meets with your approval
