Hey everybody, there's a nice looking 85-86 Gitane Defi in my size in my local craigslist. I just had a question about the threading on the bike before I pull the trigger. Is the bottom bracket, headset, etc french threaded on this, or had they moved to english threading by then? Any other funky proprietary french parts i should be aware of on this bike? I know velo orange sells some french threaded stuff, but itd be nice to know before hand either way. thanks

I'm certainly not an expert, but I think by 85-86 they had moved to english threading, perhaps someone else will chime in to confirm.

These bikes have British/ISO BB and headset threads with metric diameter tubing.

The seatposts are usually 26.4mm or 26.6mm which is correct for metric seat tubes.

They use 22.2mm inch size stems.

Yep, what Chas said.

I've owned a number of the 85 bikes and they are all standard Brit BB etc etc.

The only proprietary part that I can think of the the plastic derailleur cable guide under the BB shell. It is a Vitus design and has a plug that fits into about an 8mm hole drilled in the frame. They are hard to find these days, but I have a box of them that I sell to guys here for $5 plus postage.

The other alternative is to take it to your LBS and have them drill a hole and tap it (4mm) to take a standard design cable guide.

Of course, if the guide is in good condition, then it will probably last for another 10 or 20 years anyway.......

So, it's not exactly a big issue.

On the Defi, just check that the internal brake housing isn't rusted out.
Also check the front fork tips for cracks. I've never seen a Defi split, but I've seen three of the Victoires (next model down) crack through vertically the front tips. Bad batch of steel, perhaps?

Cheers,
Paul
