Did anyone in the Forum win this frame on eBay?

If so, give it back, it's mine, mine, mine!!!
I've been looking for one of these 1990s Gitane "Pinto Ponys" for a while now.
I was the high bidder when I went to bed. I got up and logged onto eBay to pay for it and it was GONE!
My heart was broken!
Its an early 90s Team frame. I have one just like it in Gitane blue. The frame is made of Columbus ELOS, oversized ultra light EL tubing.
I got my blue frame from the UK. The seller said that a friend of his was on a team in France and raced this frame.

I'm still only working part time so I have to watch my coin these days...
My blue one is identical to the pinto pony black and white frame.
It's a great handling bike but the oversize tubing makes for a ride that a little harsher than my 1984 Super Corsa and Tour de France bikes. |

I bid on it, but quit when it went north of $250. Wasn't that super into it...but thought it would be fun to build a 1990's bike. |

From my perspective, this is a step in solving the mystery relating to the lack of information on Gitane for this period. I received a "fact sheet" only, for the "1991 Program", and a "SUPER CLOSEOUT DEC 90" (complete bikes, framesets and parts from approximately 1985-90). The bike in question seems to be nearly identical to the 1991 "Replica 11" described therein. That model was a Columbus EL velo with a Campag. C Record group in "Team Colors" at $2,210.00 U.S. I am assuming that the scheme would have been the R.M.O. (dark blue/white fade) scheme. My best guess is that Chas' bike (lighter blue, larger diameter EL-OS tubing) might be a later '92-'93 model. We were, subsequently, told by the importer that the EL-OS (plus Genius and carbon (Vitus Carbone?)) framesets would, also, be available in the U.S. during this period.

Uncle C.,
What I, also, should have mentioned is that I would have had a great deal of trouble choosing between these two, if both had come my way. I would guess that B.H., etc. would have appreciated the added stiffness of the EL-OS frameset! None of this is to mention the treasure trove of informantion, wisdom and committment that you have provided over the years. When I was arranging to order a Replica 11, Thorsten (the importer) advised me of a 653 frameset ('89-'90 Replica 11) that I should not pass on. The Columbus bike would probably have been the ultimate, but I never regretted the 653 purchase.
Best Regards,
Peter H. |
