Hi, can someone tell me what is the correct or best match for the yellow handle bar tape seen on the '80's Team Pros?

Thanks, Dan

Yah, Benotto, but I always thought it looked like cheap cellophane plus it's slippery when wet and doesn't last that long... Just my opinion. Evil or Very Mad

Gitane used blue also white before settling on yellow about 1983?

Le Blaireau in the 1983 Flèche Wallonne

You can sometimes find Benotto tape of eBay.

This last sentence has the key word - sometimes.

I've been using Bike Ribbon bar tape and found the yellow is pretty close to some of the old Gitane photos. Plus it cleans easily and is slightly padded.

Scott,

I've been using fi'zi:k tape myself. The yellow is garish bright but real comfy! Laughing

This was some shiny rayon? cloth tape that I got from the UK. It looked great when new but started fraying in a short amount of time.

Here's the fi'zi:k tape. Note Fignon's number 61... Crying or Very sad

There's a guy from Mexico selling Benotto tape on e-bay. He has every color... I bought from him twice. First package took 2 months to reach home but overall, very nice stuff !

What I'm doing with my fake Gitane is putting regular yellow tape (Bontrager) underneath. More comfy, but... You need 2 sets of rolls.

My LBS owner convinced me to put the fi'zi:k tape on top of old cloth tape. It makes a real nice difference. Cool

You guys are all pansies. Use Benotto. Use rubber cement underneath it to hold it in place. It lasts forever.

Rubber cement is a great idea. I've used it neat and it's good too.

Benotto tape is recently available in the US again. Your LBS can get it from Merry Sales, Mel Pinto Imports or from us. 14 colors. Dress that bike.

To give you an idea...

Here's my fake Gitane (a 2003 Trek re-spray). First 2 pictures were taken in the summer 2008. Nice and elegant but kind of translucid.

These are from this morning, sorry for the crappy weather. Bontrager tape underneath, 2 sets of rolls (did not use them entirely). Much more comfy and still pretty darn cool.

Guaranteed that your handlebar tape is going to crap out on you very soon if you continue to keep leaning it against sandpaper stucco walls Wink

Nice tape jobs everyone thanks.

Nicolas, looks like you took the photos in my garden on one of the rare sunny days. Seems to be lots of grey sky recently.

I have 1 bike with Bennoto tape. From what I can tell the tape has been on these bars since maybe 1979! Shocked

The bike is like new and everything else is factory standard so the tape might have been put on at the factory too.

Like it or not, the stuff holds up over time.
