Since it's an incredible bike, take the time to clean and lube the bearings, chain, etc. and keep it great for many km and years.

Working on a bike isn't really very hard if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. You'd want to clean and grease bearings and chain, perhaps replace tires, tubes, and brake pads, and adjust brakes ...

The common steel cranks on older British bikes are cottered cranks, which are easier to machine, and therefore cheaper.
